McDonald’s in Batumi

If you have never been to Batumi, there is one thing you should know about it: it is a unique city unlike any other, and almost everything here will surprise you. It is a city of innovation and geometry, unusual architecture and modern buildings, experiments and street art. What else can surprise a visitor in Batumi besides the look of the city? Its famous McDonald’s. Georgia is rightly proud of this building, not only because it made the list of the ten most unusual and beautiful McDonald’s in the world, but also because it was designed by the talented Georgian architect Giorgi Khmaladze.

The building was completed in 2013 and soon collected several international architecture awards:

• Next Landmark 2013 (Helsinki) — special mention of the jury;
• ArchDaily Building of the Year 2014 — best building of the year in the Commercial Architecture category. The winners were chosen by the readers of ArchDaily, one of the largest architecture websites in the world;
• Architizer A+ Awards 2014 (New York) — Popular Choice winner in the commercial buildings category.

The facade is made of 460 glass panels, and the building is surrounded by a pool of water that reflects it.

The McDonald’s is combined with a SOCAR fuel station. This unusual solution did not spoil the project, because the station and the restaurant are separated from each other (the second floor of the building serves as a canopy for the fuel station). Visitors to McDonald’s do not see the station behind it. The complex also includes two small ponds outside, amazing flower beds on the second-floor terrace, a play area and a kids’ room.

Batumi McDonald’s: photos and description

The exterior is a geometric play of glass. With almost no walls as such, the whole restaurant has panoramic views. Its broken, whimsical, almost cosmic shapes look especially beautiful at night. By the way, about opening hours: the restaurant is open from 9:00 to 24:00, and McDrive works 24 hours a day, which is very convenient for those filling up at the SOCAR station.

The interior is just as original. On the first floor there are the tills, a couple of large tables, an ATM and big electronic menus. The menus make ordering faster and easier: they show the full range with prices in English and Georgian, which is clear and convenient. You can take your time to browse the picture menu with portion sizes and options, choose what you want and skip the queue. Two large staircases connect the first and second floors, and they also serve as platforms for tables. The interior is very modern and simple at the same time. You can come here with a big group or a family with kids, or alone to have a coffee and work on your laptop (the Wi-Fi signal is strong and the internet is good).

On the second floor there are more tables, including bar tables. There is a play area for kids with balls and toys, and a separate closed room for parties and birthdays with animators and everything needed for such events. Adults can relax and chat while their kids play under the supervision of McDonald’s staff. There is also a restroom on the second floor. The building is designed so that the second floor turns into a roof terrace. It is a great place to relax: fresh air, a huge flower bed decorated differently in each season, and views of the high-rises of the new part of the city. It is always calm and pleasant here, but especially cozy at sunset, when the last rays of the sun flood the roof.

What about the season? In summer be ready for huge queues, bustle and noise: there is no peace and quiet here in summer. In winter, on the other hand, some items on the menu get cheaper.

Location

The McDonald’s is located on Khimshiashvili Street, between the dancing fountains on the boulevard and the Batumi Mall shopping center. This is the very center of the city, a short walk from both the Seaside Boulevard and the New Boulevard, so the easiest way to get here is on foot. It is open until midnight.

There are now three McDonald’s in Batumi. Besides this glass one, there are two more:

• in the Grand Mall shopping center (29 Khimshiashvili St). It has a big food court, with KFC nearby;
• near Europe Square (8 Konstantine Gamsakhurdia St).

But if you want to see the architecture, go to the one on Khimshiashvili Street.

Prices have roughly doubled in eight years: in 2018 a Big Mac here cost 7.65 GEL.

If you are a big fan of fast food, it is useful to know that Batumi also has Burger King (on the second floor of Metro City mall), several Mac Shaurma outlets in different parts of the city, Dunkin’ Donuts (in Carrefour), Subway (on the first floor of Batumi Mall) and KFC (in Grand Mall). But you won’t find another place as unusual as the Batumi McDonald’s. So our advice is to visit it. Even the most seasoned travelers will enjoy coming here and taking a couple of photos.
