The Autonomous Republic of Adjara is one of the regions of Georgia, located in the southwest of the country. The area of the autonomy is 2.9 thousand square kilometers, the population is about 400 thousand people. At the same time, half of the region’s residents live in the capital Batumi – about 200 thousand people.

Sunny Adjara is a very popular tourist destination. This is a magnificent picturesque corner where the mountains and the sea meet. The height of the Adjara Mountains ranges from 2 to 3 thousand meters above sea level.

The coastal part of Adjara boasts a warm and humid subtropical climate. In late spring, when there is still snow in the mountains of Adjara, the Black Sea coast is already warm. This provides a unique opportunity to ski and swim in the sea in one day.

But Adjara is dual not only in terms of climate. The region is located at the junction of eastern and western cultures, Christianity and Islam. This is reflected in the incredible mixture of architectural styles, folklore, everyday life, gastronomic traditions. Adjara is a real kaleidoscope, in which many contrasting elements add up to an incredible dizzying cocktail of impressions and vivid emotions.

Brief history of the region

In ancient times, the lands of modern Adjara were part of the legendary Colchis, this kingdom existed in the 6th-3rd centuries BC. It is assumed that Jason sailed for the Golden Fleece approximately to where the city of Kutaisi is now located, possibly in Nokalakevi. There is also a version that in Gonio, not far from Batumi, Medea’s brother was killed, who tried to bring his sister back. And in his honor, these lands were called Apsaros.

Important trade routes passed through the Adjara Mountains, including the Great Silk Road. Since the 1st century, the Adjara region was the border of the Roman Empire, and then the Byzantine Empire.

In the 2nd century, Adjara became part of Lazika (another name is Egrisi). This kingdom was part of the Byzantine Empire for some time. Periodically, Adjara came under the rule of the Iranian Sassanid Empire and the Trebizond Empire. In the 7th century, the territory of Adjara was an independent administrative unit.

At the beginning of the 11th century, the region became part of the Tao-Klarjeti Kingdom and became part of feudal Georgia. From the second half of the 12th century until the end of the 14th century, Adjara was a separate principality within Meskheti, and was regularly raided by the Seljuk and Mongol-Tatar tribes. Somewhere in the middle of the 15th century, Adjara came under the rule of the Georgian feudal lords Abashidze.

But already in the 70s of the 15th century, Adjara was torn away from Georgia and came under the rule of the Ottoman Empire for 300 years. The territory of the region was divided into the Adjara and Batumi sanjaks. During the reign of the Turks, the region fell into decline, and the region became a center of the slave trade.

During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, Russia conquered Adjara from the Ottoman Empire. By the decision of the Berlin Congress of 1878, the region was transferred to the Russian Empire, and a new era began in its history.

In 1921, Adjara became part of the Georgian SSR as an autonomous region. It should be noted that when drawing the border, Lenin gave most of the Georgian lands to the Turks. And since then, more than half of the territory of historical Adjara has been in Turkey.

After the proclamation of independence of Georgia on April 9, 1991, Adjara became an Autonomous Republic within Georgia.

Flag of Adjara

Autonomous status within Georgia implies the existence of a flag of its own in the Republic of Adjara. Wikipedia says that the modern flag of Adjara was approved in July 2004, after the Rose Revolution. It is a cloth of 7 equal horizontal blue and white stripes. In the upper corner near the flagpole is an image of the national five-cross flag of Georgia. The blue stripes are a symbol of the Black Sea, the white ones represent purity.

The capital of Adjara

The capital of the Adjara Autonomous Region is Batumi. Today it is a modern city, the most important port hub and the most popular Black Sea resort in Georgia.

The first mention of Batumi dates back to the 4th century BC – the village of Batus was mentioned by Aristotle. But, despite this, the capital of Adjara can be called a fairly young settlement – 200 years ago, the territory of today’s Batumi was nothing but swamps and lakes. The floodplain of the Chorokhi River occupied almost the entire territory of today’s New Boulevard. For this reason, Batumi began to form quite late compared to other settlements around it.

Batumi began to transform from a small village into an important trade center in 1850, when the first shipping line between Russia and Turkey was opened. The Russian Empire understood the importance and convenience of the Batumi harbor and therefore actively contributed to the development of this settlement. At the time of the Russian conquest of Adjara, Batumi had a population of about 3,000. Just 19 years later, the city’s population had grown to 28,000.

The main catalyst for the rapid development of the city was the trade in Azerbaijani oil. By 1900, about a quarter of the world’s oil products were sold through Batumi. The taxes received by the city treasury from this trade were so large that they allowed for the implementation of such large-scale and expensive projects as the construction of the Primorsky Boulevard, the Botanical Garden, city parks, etc. To this day, they are the calling card of the city and the main source of pride for Batumi residents.

The name of the city comes from the ancient Greek word “Вαθύς” (Batus), which literally means “deep bay” – Batumi Bay is the second deepest in the Black Sea. In the Middle Ages, the city was called “Batom”, and in 1878 it received a new name – Batum. And only in 1936 was the current name of the city approved – Batumi.

Nochnoy Batumi

Today, the city’s population is up to 300 thousand people. Batumi is the most popular tourist destination in Georgia, the city amazingly combines history and modernity. The authorities preserve the authenticity of the old historical part of the city, developing new areas with ultra-modern residential complexes.

Due to the huge demand for real estate in Batumi, the city has grown incredibly in the last decade due to the development of former wastelands and outskirts. The outlines of Batumi have changed dramatically, new areas with beautiful huge skyscrapers have become a full-fledged part of the city, significantly shifting its geographical center.

Adjarians (population)

To answer the question of who the Adjarans are, it is necessary to understand how this ethnographic group was formed. Ethnically, the indigenous population of Adjara descends from ancient Georgian peoples – mostly Gurians and Laz. Moreover, the Laz inhabited mainly the territories from Trabzon to Chorokhi, and further inland, from Chorokhi to Imereti, lived the Gurians.

The term Adjara appeared in the Middle Ages, and since then a specific ethnic subgroup called the Adjarans has gradually begun to form. The main factor that caused this shift was the conquest of the territory of today’s Adjara by the Ottoman Empire.

The culture of the Adjarans is original, it differs from all other parts of Georgia. For example, the Adjaran national dress is not a chokha, like most Georgian peoples, but a tight-fitting, comfortable suit. This clothing was more practical and functional in the conditions of regular wars and the need to hide in the mountains.

Adjaria

As in all of Georgia, Adjara is dominated by the culture of hospitality and noisy feasts with a traditional sequence of toasts (the first one is “for God and for peace”), songs and dances. At the same time, Adjarian dances are the most dynamic and energetic, very spectacular “Acharuli” and “Khorumi” are known throughout the world.

Folk songs occupy a special place in the culture of Adjarans, reflecting the complex history of the people and their eternal struggle for their native land – this is a rich, complex polyphony that takes your breath away and cannot leave anyone indifferent.

Religion

Adjara, as part of Georgia, was formed in the 20th century along religious lines – it was the only region of Georgia where the Muslim faith prevailed. Of course, this is explained by the 300-year period of the region’s stay in Turkey, during which the policy of forced Islamization of the Christian population was intensively pursued.

Mechet

Over time, the invaders managed to force the Adjarans to change their religion, and the share of Muslims reached 75-80%. But in the mountains of Adjara, some residents built secret cellars, where they continued to secretly pray to Jesus Christ. After all, Christian traditions in Adjara have very ancient roots – it is believed that it was here in the 1st century AD that the first Georgian Christians appeared. Two of the 12 apostles of Christ, Andrew the First-Called and Matthew, even visited the territory of Adjara.

In addition to planting religion, the conquerors also caused enormous damage to winemaking in the region. The Turks, who did not recognize alcohol, destroyed vineyards en masse and destroyed hundreds of local wineries – marani.

The current situation is radically different, the Adjarans have managed to carry their national identity through the centuries, preserve their national culture. After the expulsion of the Turks, the residents of Adjara returned to Christian roots – part of the region converted back to Orthodoxy. Today, mainly rural Adjarans remain Muslims. Wikipedia mistakenly states that the share of Muslims in Adjara reaches 25%, but in fact there are significantly fewer – about 5-7%.

Adjara is tolerant of all religions, and the right to choose a confession is enshrined in the Constitution of the country. In addition to traditional Christian churches, Batumi has a mosque, a synagogue and a Catholic church. There is also an Armenian Gregorian church.

Kitchen

Adjarian cuisine is similar to the rest of Georgian cuisine in many ways, but it is distinguished by less use of pepper. Almost all Adjarian dishes are not spicy, which, as a rule, is very popular with tourists.

The most famous dish is, of course, “Acharuli-khachapuri”. In January 2019, it was officially recognized as a monument of intangible cultural heritage of Georgia. This khachapuri boat with a raw egg is known all over the world; in 2018, the authoritative American consulting company “Af&Co” named Acharuli “Dish of the Year”.

Adjarian Khachapuri or Boat

Adjarian cuisine boasts a wide range of dairy products – nadugi, kaymakhi, matsoni, karaki, various types of cheese. All this is actively used in the preparation of traditional Adjarian dishes.

Achma

In Adjarian cuisine, poultry meat is used more often than in other regions – chicken, turkey, quail. Fish dishes are very common.

Due to high humidity, wheat is not grown in the region. The main grain is corn, from which flatbreads called “mchady” are made.

The calling cards of Adjarian cuisine are also the specially fried cheese “borano”, dough rolls in garlic sauce “sinori”, beef “yakhni”, “malakhto-lobio”, and scrambled eggs “chirbuli”.

Borano

In the mountainous regions of Adjara, a unique rose wine is produced from the autochthonous Chkhaveri grape variety. It grows nowhere else in the world, and wine made from this grape is considered healing.

Resorts of Adjara

The natural potential of Adjara is very diverse. This autonomy is not only the center of sea tourism in Georgia, but also has dynamically developing mountain resorts. The endlessly beautiful nature of these places never ceases to amaze travelers with its magnificence. In addition to the sea and mountains, in Adjara you can see many rivers, waterfalls, mountain gorges and forests. Regardless of what you prefer, a holiday in Adjara will be unforgettable.

However, first of all, Adjara is famous for its sea resorts. Speaking about beach holidays, it is worth noting a common detail – there is no sandy coastline in Adjara, all the beaches are pebbly.

Pliaj v Batumi

Kobuleti

This is the first seaside resort of Adjara – the city is located 25 km north of Batumi. Today the length of the beach in Kobuleti is over 10 km, along it almost the entire length there is a pedestrian embankment. The further from the coastline – the cheaper the housing and the calmer the atmosphere. Kobuleti is a rather provincial city, but in the summer season it comes to life. The city is suitable for a quiet family holiday, however, there is quite an active nightlife here. There are many bars, cafes, restaurants with live music and dancing.

Chakvi

This is a small seaside village 14 km from Kobuleti and 12 km from Batumi. A quiet, peaceful place, ideal for families with children. There are few entertainment options, but the beach is well-equipped with a moderately gentle slope, uncrowded even at the peak of the season. In Chakvi, the cost of housing is one of the most reasonable on the coast, and the proximity to Batumi and Kobuleti provides excellent access to city entertainment. In Chakvi, on the territory of the Dreamland Oasis Chakvi hotel, there is one of the best water parks on the coast.

Makhinjauri

Previously, this village 6 km from Batumi was an independent administrative unit. But in 2013, after the reform, it became part of the capital of Adjara. The area boasts a large selection of hotels (there are more than 40 of them) and many affordable housing options in the private sector. The length of the beach in Makhinjauri is about 1.2 km. The coastline is well-groomed, the entrance to the water is gentle and safe, perfect for children.

Batumi

Batumi is the capital of Adjara and the undisputed leader in the rating of the best resorts in Georgia. This city is the pride of every resident of the country. Of course, first of all, the beaches that Adjara has are popular. Batumi provides almost unlimited opportunities for recreation, the city annually breaks records for tourist attendance.

Batumi preserves unique historical areas, while the new part of the city is built up with huge skyscrapers – hotel and residential complexes. Foreigners are buying up apartments in Batumi, wanting to have their own apartment by the sea. Thanks to investments, Batumi’s infrastructure is rapidly developing, and the city is becoming more beautiful year after year.

Gonio, Kvariati, Sarpi

These are three separate seaside villages located 11 km south of Batumi, towards the Turkish border. Their geographical outlines are blurred, they flow into each other and have almost identical tourist characteristics. Here is the cleanest sea on the entire Adjara coast, beautiful wide beaches surrounded by picturesque mountains and healing air, thanks to the eucalyptus groves growing nearby.

Goderdzi

Goderdzi is a recent discovery in the resort industry of the region. It is the highest point of Adjara and is located in the alpine zone. The special local microclimate, formed by the proximity to the sea, is characterized by high humidity and heavy rainfall. Goderdzi boasts the largest snow cover in all of Georgia.

The complex was opened only in 2015 and, despite its relatively modest characteristics compared to Bakuriani and Gudauri, it immediately became a popular place among locals and then foreign tourists. The length of the ski slopes in Goderdzi is 13 km, the altitude reaches 2,400 m, there are 2 ski lifts, the total length of the cable car is 4 km.

The season lasts from mid-December to mid-April. Despite the fact that the resort’s infrastructure is imperfect and is in the process of development, we recommend visiting Goderdzi. The Adjara ski resort is located just 100 km from the sea coast – this is a truly unique opportunity to combine a beach and ski holiday in one trip.

Beshumi

Another beautiful place in Adjara is the summer highland resort of Beshumi. It is located approximately 95 km from Batumi and 7 km from the Goderdzi gorge on the eastern slope of the Arsian ridge. This is a subalpine zone, the altitude above sea level is about 2,000 m. The resort is located among picturesque coniferous forests and its main attraction is the crystal clear ozonized mountain air.

The season lasts from mid-June to early September. The majority of vacationers are residents of Batumi, Akhaltsikhe and neighboring places – they bring their children here to “change the air” and strengthen their immunity. The infrastructure of Beshumi is quite well developed, there are many housing options, shops, cafes and other necessary facilities.

The best way to get to know Adjara is with the help of excursions from local guides. A good guide will not only show you famous attractions, but also those that few people know about, where there are few tourists. Here is a list of the most popular excursions in Adjara:

Read reviews and choose an excursion to your taste.

If you want to get to know Adjara in an individual comfortable mode, we recommend ordering an excursion from Vitaly Kibitlevsky.

Adjara has magnificent nature – mountains, forests, waterfalls, mineral water springs, rivers and canyons. We tried to highlight the most popular, the most beautiful of those that are easy to get to. We did not highlight those historical and natural sites that require driving on severe off-road or walking for several hours. If you are interested in a specific site that is not on this list, write to us – and we will try to tell you the best way to get to this place and what is worth seeing there.

Unfortunately, most of historical Adjara is now part of Turkey. Lenin gave over half of the territory of the pre-revolutionary Batumi region to the Turks, first by the Brest Peace Treaty signed on March 3, 1918, and then after Turkey’s defeat in World War I – by the Treaty of Friendship and Brotherhood between Turkey and the RSFSR on March 16, 1921.

According to the latter treaty, Turkey recognized the right of the Soviet Union to the northern part of the Batumi region with the city of Batumi, and the rest of the territory became part of Turkey. The state border was confirmed by the Treaty of Kars on October 13, 1921.

I hope this article will help you plan your trip to Adjara. To the land of tropical summer and green mountains. The place where tea and citrus fruits were first planted in the Caucasus. The birthplace of the rare pink wine Chkhaveri and the world-famous khachapuri boat.
